Bryson DeChambeau is right in the mix at the PGA Championship as he seeks a third major, despite doing his best to throw things away on the final few holes.

DeChambeau was right at the summit at one point as he, Scottie Scheffler and a resurgent Jon Rahm all battled to get into the final groupings for Sunday.

After winning the US Open in 2024, DeChambeau has gone from strength to strength and he’s very much been a star attraction around Quail Hollow this week.

However, it could have been even better for him in round three.

DeChambeau made bogey on 16, double on 17, before scrambling for par on 18 as he cost himself three shots at a key time.

And speaking to the press afterwards, DeChambeau admitted he was stunned by what he did on the 18th.

Bryson DeChambeau can’t believe what he did on the 18th at Quail Hollow

DeChambeau was quickly off the 18th and into fulfilling his media obligations and he was speaking to UK broadcaster Sky Sports looking back at his round.

Indeed, when analysing his tough finish, DeChambeau admitted he’d been left shocked by where his tee shot ended up on 18, after he believed he’d hit it perfect.

“I played really well. Really disappointed with the way it ended. Could have easily made birdie on 17 compared to making double, just the wind flipped and it went straight in – or more in off the right than I was expecting,” DeChambeau told Sky Sports.

“18 I hit it down the middle of the fairway, picked up the tee thinking it was perfect and it flew right into the bunker which blew my mind and I got up and down, which was a great up and down.

“I left a few out there, got a couple of great up and downs and made some birdies. But man I was there to shoot seven or eight under today and I just didn’t capitalise. It felt the same way the first two rounds. It was really weird. Playing great golf, just not scoring the way I know I can.”

Has DeChambeau left himself too much to do as Scottie Scheffler pulls clear?

If it was anyone else at the top of the leaderboard, you’d suggest Bryson DeChambeau was right in there at just four shots back and given the quality he possesses.

However, he is trying to hunt down a certain Scottie Scheffler, who has effectively cruised to the top of the board without even playing his absolute best.

Now out in front, Scheffler is going to take some stopping and those three shots dropped by DeChambeau here are going to prove crucial.

Of course, anything is possible. But it does feel like Bryson has left himself a touch too much to do.
