Whether you are the LIV Golf side of the fence, the PGA Tour side, or simply just enjoy golf in general, one thing that is seriously frustrating is when a player invited to a major by the powers that be fluffs his lines and that’s exactly what’s happened with Dustin Johnson.
The two-time major champion was a late invite to the PGA Championship as the PGA of America afforded the 40-year-old another chance at winning the event.
Johnson has finished second at the PGA twice in 2019 and 2020 and despite his poor form on LIV Golf, was given the nod to come over to Quail Hollow. It is worth noting, Johnson was probably invited due to him not getting the full five-years of his exemption from his 2020 Masters win, albeit still, the invite still raised questions.
However, in an utterly dismal showing of golf at the highest level, Johnson is going home early after carding a score of 12 over par for his two rounds.
And while Johnson has had a Hall of Fame career, there is a strong argument to say he might as well just hang up the clubs already.

Dustin Johnson should step away from top level golf after his PGA Championship showing
While some on LIV Golf have delivered and played well – see Jon Rahm or Bryson DeChambeau – there are a number of players who are nowhere near the levels they once were.
Dustin Johnson is one of those and shooting 12 over par for the second major of the year is simply unacceptable for a player of his standard.
Of course, other players also struggled and there’s no shame in missing a cut.
But to do so in the manner that Johnson has done here is pretty embarrassing and when he gets back home, he’ll surely be questioning his motivation.
Johnson is sat on a nice contract over on LIV and while that’s all well and good, he is effectively taking spots of others who perhaps care a touch more in the modern game. Furthermore, he’s effectively embarrassed the PGA of America too, who came under fire from some initially for the invite.
Indeed, with claims that Johnson is cruising it a bit over on LIV, there is an argument to be made that come the end of his LIV deal, ‘DJ’ should just simply retire.
Has LIV Golf hampered some of the world’s best?
There can be absolutely no argument that the lack of regular golf and the 54 hole format on LIV Golf has had an effect on the players.
Yes, we see the odd performance from a DeChambeau or a Rahm at the majors. But they are superstars in their own right and have won multiple majors between them.

The likes of Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith and even a player like Talor Gooch – who we never see now on the PGA side – have looked way short of their best.
As more and more time goes, it looks more and more like LIV is ruining the careers of certain stars, in terms of their golf game that is.
For someone like Dustin Johnson, a legend of the game with two majors and all the money he’ll ever need, there’ll now be question marks over whether he continues or not.
