Stewart Cink was part of Jim Furyk’s leadership team as the United States won the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Furyk’s decision-making was criticised before the event, but the 54-year-old’s choices paid off after Keegan Bradley sealed the decisive point in Quebec.

Bradley is now focused on the Ryder Cup after the 38-year-old was chosen ahead of Cink for the Bethpage Black event. Bradley believes Cink deserves to be a captain in the future, and after serving as vice-captain in Montreal, Cink has detailed what he’s learned about team golf.

Speaking on the Fairways of Life YouTube Channel, the 2009 Open Championship winner revealed what he would be like if he were ever named captain.

“First of all, I certainly hope to become a captain one day. I don’t know what will happen in that regard; it’s kind of out of my hands,” said Cink. “It’s a lot of fun being part of the team, and I see myself being organised and a little bit ahead of the process.

The 51-year-old added: “That’s what I would hope to be. I’ve sensed over the last couple of years and also when I was a player that any time you start to get a little bit behind, there are questions, and the players are starting to wonder who they’re playing with or who’s not playing in a session. That is when things feel like they’re out of control.

“Jim was amazing at being ahead of the game. Playing sessions one session ahead, players just knew what they were doing. Friday, the 0-5 session where we got blanked, there was a wobble but no real change to what the players were expecting; I think that’s a major strength.”

Stewart Cink must wait for Ryder Cup chance

Given the USA’s left-field appointment of Bradley, Cink may have to wait for some time to become Ryder Cup captain.

Clearly, the US selectors were inspired by Europe’s decision to hand Luke Donald the captaincy whilst the Englishman was still operating at a high level within the game.

Bradley won during the FedEx Cup playoffs and will add a sense of familiarity to the 12-man contingent next September after being part of the Presidents Cup side.
