The Scottish Open for 2024 is in the books and Robert MacIntyre is the man who has come out on top.
MacIntyre battled away in a rollercoaster of a final round to end on -18 and nudge just ahead of Adam Scott to take glory.
The popular Scotsman rolled in a 20-footer on the final hole to take the win as well and complete a win that he admitted earlier in the weekend was a dream.
“I’ve not been shy in saying it, the Scottish Open is the one that I want. That’s my end goal, I’ve said it from the start of the week. The Scottish Open on a resume for my whole career is what I want”, MacIntyre had said yesterday.
However, while everyone in golf was happy to see MacIntyre complete a lifelong dream, his win was not without a touch of controversy.

On the 16th hole and having smashed his drive into the long rough, MacIntyre faffed around his ball for some time before claiming to have spotted a sprinkler head within the rough.
Sure enough, rules officials said that due to the sprinkler, MacIntyre was entitled to relief and after taking a drop, he hammered a brilliant second shot to make eagle and catch up with Scott.
Of course, the rules are rules when it comes to golf.
But over on social media, there was a flurry of anger at what MacIntyre did, with some suggesting he purposely delayed things to find reason for relief.
Golf fans criticise Robert MacIntyre despite his Scottish Open win
Over on X, as is always the case with a major talking point in golf, there were plenty of comments putting MacIntyre in a negative light.
Indeed, it seems plenty of golf fans are far from impressed with what they saw from MacIntyre.
One user labelled the drop as ‘shameful’ behaviour.
While another user suggested MacIntyre knew what had transpired.
@jimssource went as far to accuse the Scot of actually cheating, saying:
“100% swung and missed. Guy is a cheater”
While @MJThomas2 labelled the whole decision a disgrace.
Another user admitted they’d placed a cheeky bet on MacIntyre and cashed in from the drop onwards.
While another X user called the drop ‘insane’ due to the hefty practice swing MacIntyre took.
MacIntyre, of course, will not care one bit as he’s the one holding the trophy and getting the win.
However, it seems like some fans are not going to relent on how he got over the line.
Time for a rule change, perhaps?
