Going into the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge this weekend, many expected Scottie Scheffler to come roaring into contention.
Scheffler had put a scrambling opening two rounds behind him at Colonial to climb to second at the end of round three and just four shots back of Davis Riley at the top.
Given Riley’s lack of experience in terms of winning and the fact Scheffler has been in such brilliant form in 2024, many expected the world number one to reel Riley in.
However, after nine holes and at the time of writing here, Scheffler had dropped a whopping seven shots behind Riley and carded a plus three through nine.

For Scheffler, it’s just not the sort of form we or him are used to seeing.
Of course, Scheffler has had quite the last few weeks. He was arrested and then released at the PGA Championship last week and didn’t end up producing the goods then either.
And over on social media, plenty of golf fans are all suggesting that the arrest – and the jail sandwich – has knocked our world number one back a few steps!
Golf fans suggest Scottie Scheffler’s arrest has impacted his game
As ever in the world of social media, X was full of golf fans commenting on Scheffler’s performance again.
After the No Laying Up account posed the question of ‘Does Scottie stink?’, a lot of the responses seemed to point to his stint behind bars last week.
Another X user, @TPPrat, made a joke of the situation.
“Those destroyed cop pants lay heavy on his mind“
While another, @eicky32, also made a bit of a joke of the whole situation.
“Just hasn’t been the same since he got out of prison. Like Uncle Jimmy when he got out. Just a hardened criminal now“
However, a few fans did see the realism in the situation, suggesting it’s to be expected that Scheffler is struggling a bit since the ordeal.
Scheffler, it seems, needs to take some time out and get back to what he does best.
With the US Open just weeks away, he needs to find some form otherwise his tremendous start to 2024 risks falling off a cliff.
