Wesley Bryan was one of the biggest names to miss out on finishing inside the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings, with the 34-year-old dropping below the number after missing the cut at The RSM Classic last week.

The PGA Tour probably could not have asked for a better storyline ahead of The RSM Classic, with Wesley Bryan the man in 125th spot in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the season finale. Of course, it is only the top 125 who automatically keep their cards. And Bryan is extremely popular with those who follow YouTube golf.

Bryan is also a winner on the PGA Tour, having won the RBC Heritage back in 2017. So there would have been plenty of fans who tuned in to the first two days in Georgia to see how he would fare.

What was ‘weird’ about Wesley Bryan’s performance at The RSM Classic

Unfortunately, a three over par second round put paid to Bryan’s hopes of retaining his card from this tournament. He made one double bogey and three bogeys on Friday to fall away.

Conditions looked to be particularly difficult during that second round for Bryan. However, speaking on The Smylie Show, Smylie Kaufman suggested that he did not always feel that Bryan was helping himself with how he approached his round.

“It was really weird commentating on him, because I think he’s really quick in how he plays. But he was so rushed, he didn’t take any time over it. I know that’s kind of like his thing, but I just felt like he let a couple of shots go not just giving it a little extra time,” he said.

“Now, that’s just my opinion, other people who maybe watch Wes play may be like this is what he does and this is how he plays. But, to me, it just felt he needed to slow down a little bit.”

A blow to the PGA Tour as Bryan loses his card

The good news for Bryan is that he has a number of options available to him. He is clearly good enough to regain his card at some stage, while the YouTube channel he has with his brother George is one of the bigger ones in the space.

But it is definitely a blow for the PGA Tour as they struggle to attract audiences. Bryan tied the course record at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, and fans were furious Bryan’s round was barely shown during the coverage.

He is someone who does bring eyeballs to the professional game. So it is a shame that he looks set to not be playing a full schedule on the PGA Tour next season.
