Scottie Scheffler will start the Tour Championship with a two-shot lead as the world number one looks to finally win golf’s most lucrative prize.

Yet, despite his 2024 dominance, Scheffler has looked uncomfortable since the FedEx Cup playoffs began in Memphis.

Scheffler doesn’t like the FedEx Cup format, and frustrations have boiled over in recent weeks. The American produced two moments of anger at the St Jude Championship after failing to compete with eventual winner Hideki Matsuyama.

Scheffler then completely lost his head during the second round of the BMW Championship, leading to criticism from golf fans on social media.

Now, golf commentator Smylie Kaufman has tried to explain why Scheffler has been so frustrated recently.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Smylie Show, Kaufman admitted Scheffler is probably frustrated due to the current FedEx Cup format.

Kaufman explained: “Heading into this week, the Tour Championship, are we going to be able to settle ourselves a little bit and not let our emotions get the best of us because it’s going to be a grind and probably not what Scottie feels like should be the situation considering the year that he’s had or at least having a bigger stroke lead not over just Xander but the rest of the field.

“I think he feels entitled and deserving of winning the season-long race for the FedEx Cup.”

He added: “Last week, I just felt there was frustration from missing putts in Memphis, ball-striking being off last week, losing strokes in his iron game, which never happens. Showing up this week, how fresh is he going to be.”

Scottie Scheffler must get back to basics to stop Xander Schauffele at East Lake

Scheffler’s past two performances have been massively uncharacteristic, and the world number one must get back to what’s worked so well during pretty much the whole of the 2024 season.

The American’s success has primarily been down to his ability to put bad shots behind and bounce back almost immediately while relying on his brilliant ball-striking ability.

If Scheffler’s disgruntled nature continues, the door will be wide open for Schauffele at East Lake. The diminutive American has a sensational record in Atlanta and will fancy his chances of chasing down his compatriot come Sunday evening as the final stretch of the 2024 PGA Tour season takes place.
