Tony Finau is struggling to get into any sort of good form on the PGA Tour right now and Smylie Kauffman has shared a worrying statistic.

After finishing second at the Texas Children’s Open back in March, Finau’s form has dipped dramatically and it’s only in the last two tournaments he’s managed to sneak back into the top 20.

This weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Finau was one of the early leaders and very much in contention around rounds one and two.

However, things unravelled for Finau over the weekend and he ended up back in a tie for 17th.

And heading into the US Open in just a few weeks’ time, former PGA player Smylie Kauffman has shared a worrying stat for Finau.

Tony Finau struggling over weekends and the stats prove it

Speaking on the Smylie Show podcast about Finau’s drop away at weekends this season, Kauffman picked out a concerning stat in the American’s game.

“I’m looking at Tony Finau’s scoring averages by round real quick, Charlie,” Kauffman said.

“His round four scoring average is 118th on the PGA Tour this year. I was curious to see if that was like a trend of him not playing well on Sunday.

“He’s 25th, 21st, and then it’s the weekend. He’s been 79th and 118th this year. It’s been Thursday, Friday has been good. And then Saturday, Sunday tailed off about a stroke each round.”

A trend that needs reversing

Tony Finau is one of the best players on the PGA Tour to never win a major. Every year, he is tipped to finally break his duck but every year, there seems to be something holding him back.

This time, it looks like there’s something in his game when it comes to playing at weekends that is stopping Finau from doing the business.

On his day, he’s more than capable. Finau has six PGA Tour wins to his name and has finished top five in each of the majors without ever winning.

However, this worrying trend shared by Kauffman needs to change and change quickly.

Failure to address it is just going to lead to more major failures and before he knows it, another year will have passed him by.
