Round one is in the books at the Charles Schwab Challenge over in Texas and Tony Finau has been giving his verdict on the new-look course.

The historically well-regarded Colonial Golf Course has undergone a series of renovations to get it ready for the 2024 event.

Money has been spent improving different aspects of the course while also trying to make things a touch harder for the PGA players.

Indeed, Ryan Palmer has explained how he got involved with shifting some of the bunkers. Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, also praised the new-look course after his initial practice rounds.

And speaking after carding a fine opening round of four under par, Tony Finau has now offered up his take on the Colonial’s renovations.

Tony Finau’s verdict on Colonial after playing round one of the Charles Schwab

Speaking in his flash interview with the media after carding his well-plotted four under, Finau admitted he’s been pretty happy with what he’s experienced so far.

“Yeah, I think it’s been good. I think the renovations have been nice and most of the holes you can tell they’ve made it a bit more member friendly,” Finau said.

“You can roll the ball up more so than in the past.

“I think once the golf course settles I think it’s going to play really really nicely and overall I think I kind of like the changes.”

Nice to hear a course praised by the top players

It’s easy to forget just how much work goes into making a golf course what it is.

We’ve all played local municipal course and even those are kept in good condition to manage a huge footfall throughout the year around the world.

However, to get these top course in shape for PGA events takes so much work and given Colonial took on extra renovation work as well, it’s nice to hear players praise the works been done.

Finau is one of the nicer guys in golf as it is and given he carded a -4, he was never going to be in a bad mood about the course layout.

But still, this is a nice nod to the designers and workers on site and they’ll be pleased to get this sort of feedback after just one round.
