Shane Lowry fired in a superb third round at Valhalla to put himself well in contention to win the PGA Championship.

The Irishman came from nowhere to fire in a near record-breaking round of 62, which was very nearly a 61 thanks to a putt just missing on 18.

But overall, it was a remarkable performance from Lowry and he’ll go into round four firmly in the mix to add a second major championship to his trophy cabinet.

Of course, key to Lowry’s round was his putting. Lowry made 161 feet of putts – more than he’s made in the entirety of 2024 so far – to shoot up the leaderboard.

And speaking about that putting, Lowry conceded he’s had to make some changes to get it right.

Shane Lowry reveals what he’s been doing to improve his putting after stunning third round at Valhalla

Speaking in his interview after round three, Lowry explained what he’s been doing when it comes to improving his putting.

“I don’t know. I changed my putter at the Zurich Classic and I think if I’d have putted well me and Rory would have won by a few,” Lowry said.

“I’ve sort of changed up how I’ve been practicing the last two weeks. Sort of getting away from the technical side of it and doing a lot of drills and holing putts.

“But yeah, it’s nice to finally see a few going into the hole cos it’s been a slow year for me on the greens.”

Lowry could win the lot

Sitting at -13 is a superb going into the final day and the fact Lowry has remained just two behind the leaders means he is right in the mix.

For Lowry, he is among a number of Europeans who will fancy their chances going into round four.

Rory McIlroy could be a bit too far back, but the likes of Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre are firmly in contention, as is Viktor Hovland.

However, Lowry has done it before in terms of major wins and that could well be a difference maker when it comes to the crunch and not buckling under pressure.

If McIlroy isn’t to win it, then you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be rooting for Lowry to do the business.
