Key storylines to follow on day four of the PGA Championship

Can Xander Schauffele finally get across the line?

Xander Schauffele is beginning to find himself with a reputation of being someone who will always be in contention, but never quite have that ability to get the job done.

The 30-year-old has a staggering eight top ten finishes in 2024 without winning, including up against Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship last week.

But he has led the way throughout this tournament, so he has the perfect opportunity to prove a real point.

The Europeans are poised

It is three Americans at the top of the leaderboard, with Sahith Theegala currently third, but behind them, there is a strong charge being made by the Europeans.

Shane Lowry sits tied for fourth after tying the major championship record round of 62 on Saturday, while Viktor Hovland, Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre are all within three shots of the lead.

Belgian Thomas Detry meanwhile, has an outside chance as he currently finds himself on -10.

Early pressure from Rory McIlroy or Scottie Scheffler?

Both Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler appear to have too much to do on Sunday to seriously contend at Valhalla, with the pair seven and eight shots back respectively.

But of course, both men have the potential to shoot a stunning score, so it would be no surprise to see one emerge onto the top page of the leaderboard by the time Morikawa and Schauffele really get into their round.

If anyone is going to come from absolutely nowhere and contend, it may well be one of McIlroy or Scheffler.
