It wasn’t to be for Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic as they had a poor final round to finish well down the leaderboard.
It was still a top 15 finish for the defending champions but after closing the gap at the top in round three, a fourth round of level par was not what they wanted.
In the end, things fizzled out for Lowry and McIlroy and while they obviously had fun on the course, it wasn’t the result they wanted.

Nevertheless, the story here is of two really good friends who love playing golf together and in the main, they did bring excitement to a tournament with some relative unknowns at the top of the leaderboard.
And speaking about his partnership with McIlroy after the final round, Lowry spoke of just how much he loves playing with his good friend.

Shane Lowry gives verdict on playing with Rory McIlroy
Anyone who has tuned in to watching any of the Zurich Classic will know full well that Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy have loved playing together.
Indeed, after McIlroy’s Masters success, there was even some doubt over whether he’d return to partner Lowry.
However, turn up he did and according to Lowry, while he loves playing with McIlroy, the final round simply went completely wrong.
“Look, it’s nice. Obviously we came here — I was happy Rory came. It was nice to come and try and defend. I think we did a good job for the most part,” Lowry admitted.
“I think we played all right, just today nothing really happened for us, and then after the delay we just went — everything that could go wrong did go wrong.
“I had a great week. I’m happy my man came here this week, and we had a great time, and it was fun.”
What Rory McIlroy now plans on doing after whirlwind two weeks
The thrill of winning The Masters and then the idea of defending a title with Lowry was always going to take it out of McIlroy and now, he’s admitted it’s time for some down time.
McIlroy spoke with Lowry after the final round and conceded that his plan for now is to get some rest, before getting some practice in ahead of his next event.
“Yeah, I’ve got to just take a little bit of time here. It’s nice to have a week off, and yeah, reset and try to get some practice in. I feel like it’s like two practice weeks coming up in a way with next week at home and then Truist, as well, in some ways,” McIlroy admitted.
McIlroy is next in action at the Truist Championship in Philadelphia before he goes to Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship.
