As Scottie Scheffler presented Rory McIlroy with the green jacket last week, you could tell he had that look in his eye that he wanted to get back to winning ways himself ASAP.

Scheffler has yet to produce his best form in 2025 but has still been in the mix for tournaments.

After his stunning 2024 season, expectations are at an all-time high for Scottie Scheffler and most people in golf accept a win will come sooner or later for the world number one.

Now, with the RBC Heritage underway at Harbour Town Links, Scheffler’s round one performance appears to tell us that win number one of the season is indeed fast approaching.

In fact, it was so impressive, it’s delivered a statistic that sends an ominous warning to the rest of the field.

Why Scottie Scheffler’s first round at the RBC Heritage will worry the rest of the field

When we look at golfers in the last couple of years who set high bars and break records, Scottie Scheffler is right up there.

His record-breaking 2024 was an absolute masterpiece really and even though he’s not won in 2025 yet, the signs are there he’s not too far off it.

Indeed, in the opening round at the RBC Heritage, despite being three behind Justin Thomas, Scheffler’s statistics are looking a touch ominous for the rest.

In a stat shared by Justin Ray, Scheffler has gained 5.24 strokes on the field with his approach play. As Ray mentions, that is Scheffler’s best in more than two years and in nearly 10,000 rounds at the RBC, it’s only been seen five other times.

Scottie Scheffler can reel in Justin Thomas for another big weekend for the PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy winning The Masters was the perfect tonic the PGA Tour needed as viewing numbers spiked and the feel good story of McIlroy finally winning took over.

Now over at Harbour Town, we look like being on course for another big week.

Justin Thomas equalled the scoring record with a 61 in round one but even with his very best, Scottie Scheffler is still just three back.

That will be a worry for Thomas and the rest of the field and it looks like Scheffler is finding some form, despite still being off his best.

If Scheffler repeats the same sort of effort over the next three days, there’s a strong chance he catches Thomas and gets win number one for the season.
