Scottie Scheffler sparked much debate after sharing his honest thoughts on the FedEx Cup playoff format before the St Jude Championship.
Scheffler caused disagreement after suggesting the playoff series shouldn’t be called the season-long race and that the current format is “silly”.
Rory McIlroy disagreed with Scheffler’s comments, along with several professionals who felt the Tour Championship provided the most excitement for the watching audience.
Former coach Peter Kostis has now weighed in on the debate and spoken about Scheffler’s controversial comments.
Scottie Scheffler causes stir with FedEx Cup format comments

Speaking during the Kostis and McCord Podcast, the 77-year-old claimed Scheffler’s remarks caused a wide range of discourse on the matter.
“Once Scottie Scheffler had his presser at East Lake and basically said the format was silly, that opened up the floodgates for me,” Kostis explained.
Kostis then suggested a new format which should be introduced at the Tour Championship.
“He technically finished third without the strokes,” Kostis added. “I saw if we are going to make this entertaining and come to a conclusion or whatever, then instead of starting him ten under, give him ten mulligans for the four days. I just allocated them according to the year-end points. It’s entertaining and would get people to watch.”
Mulligans will never be accepted on the PGA Tour
Kostis’ suggestion about mulligans must have been tongue-in-cheek. A mulligan allows a player to replay a shot without receiving a penalty.
Mulligans, however, are typically used in games between friends and are never allowed in professional or competitive environments.
Regardless of the idea, change is probably required when it comes to the Tour Championship. The format feels unimaginative and struggled to provide any excitement during Scheffler’s route to golf’s most prestigious prize.
