World number one Scottie Scheffler has ground to make up in the final round of the St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama currently leads on 17 under after carding a six-under-par 65 in Memphis. Scheffler sits seven shots back alongside Sam Burns.

The two-time Masters champion will now try to replicate his Olympic comeback in the first FedEx Cup playoff event. Sky Sports pundit David Howell believes Scheffler is Matsuyama’s biggest competition despite sitting seven back.

Now, Scheffler has spoken about his chances of victory.

Speaking after his third round in Memphis, Scheffler explained how Matsuyama will face a challenge trying to close out the tournament.

A reporter asked: “You still have a chance tomorrow, chasing Hideki?”

Scheffler replied: “It’s a golf course where there’s a lot of opportunity, and it’s going to be tough to close out the back nine; there’s a lot of water coming down the stretch.

“Try to get off to a good start. Hideki is obviously playing some fantastic golf, but I’ll do my best to put a little bit of pressure on him and see what happens.”

St Jude Championship victory would cap eventful week for Scottie Scheffler

It’s been an eventful week for Scheffler, both on and off the course at the St Jude Championship.

During the first round, Scheffler lost his cool on the 13th hole and during Saturday’s play, the American appeared highly frustrated at times.

Furthermore, away from the course, Scheffler angered fans after voicing his concerns with the current FedEx Cup system.

The world number one appeared to suggest the current format isn’t representative of a season-long race. Scheffler will likely start the Tour Championship at East Lake with just a two-shot lead, an advantage the American feels should be increased.
