Scottie Scheffler is not having the US Open that many expected. He’s four over par and outside the top 10 after 54 holes.
It’s not been a poor performance from the world number one, especially compared to Rory McIlroy (+10) and Bryson DeChambeau (missed cut).
However, he will be disappointed that he has not played as well as he did at the PGA Championship and the Memorial Tournament recently.
Scheffler admitted in his latest press conference that he has found Oakmont so “challenging” that it has caused him to make some unusual mistakes.

Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland made silly mistakes at US Open
Scheffler shared what happened with Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland on day two of the US Open that made them all laugh.
“Yeah, it’s challenging,” Scheffler said. “This golf course is tough. Collin, Viktor, and I were laughing in [the scoring tent] yesterday because there was one instance where Collin walked through my line because he got flustered by chipping it over the green.
“Viktor did the same thing on the hole before because he played a little hockey. And then I messed up some scores on Collin’s card.
“So, we were sitting laughing in scoring like, ‘What are we doing out there?’ Maybe once or twice a year, you mess up somebody’s score. I messed up two of Collin’s yesterday, so it’s challenging in a lot of different ways. It’s especially challenging when you’re not hitting the ball where you’re looking.”
Scheffler, Morikawa, and Hovland are not the only three players to make uncharacteristic mistakes this week at Oakmont.
Shane Lowry and DeChambeau both picked up balls without marking them, and McIlroy smashed a tee box and threw a club in frustration.
Scottie Scheffler still has ‘outside chance’ to win US Open
Scheffler is eight shots behind the leaders with 18 holes to play at the US Open, so it would probably be fair to rule him out of contention.
However, we are talking about the best golfer on the planet at the moment, and he hasn’t given up hope himself.
“Overall, I still have an outside chance going into tomorrow, so I’m going to go and hit a few balls, get some rest, and get ready for another grind tomorrow,” he added.
Scheffler now has a similar reputation to Tiger Woods in his prime, when just seeing his name on the leaderboard could intimidate other players.
An impressive front nine at Oakmont on Sunday could throw him into the mix, especially if the leaders struggle under the immense pressure.
