In a golfing world where Scottie Scheffler is so dominant, it feels like there’s some sort of record for him to break or surge past every single week.
This week saw him equal Tiger Woods’ record at the Hero World Challenge, adding to the glowing list of records Scheffler broke in 2024.
But the world number one is not done just yet and he has a number of top players in his sights when it comes to surpassing them.
Indeed, when it comes to being ranked as the best golfer in the world, Scheffler is right on the tails of some of the best to ever do it and as the PGA Tour season kicks off in 2025, Scheffler will fly past a certain Rory McIlroy in one category.

Scottie Scheffler set to become third longest reigning world number one in 2025
Scheffler has now been top of the pile for a whopping 82 weeks consecutive, taking his total weeks at number one to 117.
Quite remarkably, that means that by the time the Sentry finishes at the start of January, Scheffler will have jumped past Rory McIlroy into fourth all-time of weeks as number one.
From there, Scheffler will need just another 13 weeks as the top dog to surpass Dustin Johnson on 135 and move into third all-time.
Of course, Scheffler is going to need some run to usurp the two above him. Greg Norman is second with 331 weeks, while the great Tiger Woods has spent a whopping 683 weeks as world number one, since the inception of the OWGR in 1986.
| Player | Total weeks as world number one |
| Tiger Woods | 683 |
| Greg Norman | 331 |
| Dustin Johnson | 135 |
| Rory McIlroy | 122 |
| Scottie Scheffler | 117 |
Longest consecutive weeks as world number one
While Scheffler will need a miracle of sorts to catch Tiger Woods at the very top – Woods spent a huge 281 and then 264 weeks as the top player – he is in line to catch the rest.
Scheffler is now tied with Nick Faldo and will go past him this week on 81, while Greg Norman is next in the firing line as Scheffler’s stock continues to rise.
From there, Scheffler would need another three-year plus reign to even come close to dethroning Tiger.
You never know in golf. But Tiger Woods can be fairly confident of keeping that record for the time being, despite Scheffler’s brilliance.
