Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler put themselves in the mix to win The Players by both playing solid enough in round two at TPC Sawgrass but Scheffler has admitted he wasn’t overly enamoured to see McIlroy doing the business.
McIlroy shot a second round 68 while Scheffler carded a round of 70 to keep somewhere in the mix at five under heading into the weekend.
Of course, McIlroy’s opening two days have put him at nine under, just two back of the lead.
And after McIlroy praised Scheffler for being so consistent, it looks like the roles have been reversed this time, much to the annoyance of Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler praises ‘boring’ Rory McIlroy
Speaking about playing alongside McIlroy, Scheffler discussed the round from the Northern Irishman and insisted that he was a touch jealous of the ‘boring’ round McIlroy produced.
“Yeah, I mean, I didn’t really do a whole lot to fire them [the crowd] up today,” Scheffler said.
“Rory did some good stuff there, but he didn’t hole out or do anything crazy, but yeah, I don’t know. He did, yeah. He chipped in on the first hole. That seemed pretty loud. But after that he just played solid, boring golf.
“Man, how terrible is that. I hate that for him,” Scheffler then laughed.

Why Scottie Scheffler is impressed with Rory McIlroy
With Scheffler clearly having a joke about how good McIlroy was and obviously wanting a bit of that himself, he did then find time to speak more positively about McIlroy.
Asked on the spot just how impressive McIlroy’s longevity is, Scheffler admitted that it’s great to witness a player producing for so long.
Well not only his consistency week-to-week but year after year. I think you got a guy there that’s played really well out here for about 15 years. Maybe even be longer than that. You guys would remember better than me,” Scheffler continued.
“But it’s very impressive, not only his week-to-week but his longevity year after year. The guy’s won, I think they said 27 times this morning on the first tee on TOUR, and he’s doing a few things right to be putting up those kind of numbers.”
As McIlroy goes into round three looking to win, Scheffler will want to keep the pressure on and after Justin Thomas ripped through the field in round two, there is scoring chances at TPC Sawgrass, albeit harder conditions are expected.
