The season-ending Tour Championship starts on Thursday, and Scottie Scheffler has shared his thoughts on the extensive changes made to East Lake.

The Atlanta venue’s greens and bunkering have undergone major surgery since the 2023 edition, and new grass has been implemented throughout the course.

Scheffler, who has typically struggled at the Tour Championship, has now shared his thoughts on the renovations as the FedEx Cup top 30 get set to compete for golf’s most lucrative prize.

Speaking during his pre-tournament press conference, Scheffler admitted the changes he’d seen were drastic. “It’s definitely interesting. It’s basically a new golf course from what it was before. It’s not really at all the same,” Scheffler explained.

What’s more, although Smylie Kaufman claimed the greens were excellent, Scheffler believes the putting surfaces could be challenging.

“The greens, since they’re new, are extremely firm, which I think makes it more challenging. It’ll be tough to access some of the hole locations. I think we’ll have a bit to learn in terms of golf course setup,” Scheffler added.

“But overall, we’ll see how it plays. It’s so new right now that it’s really hard to tell exactly how — all I know is it’s way different.”

East Lake renovations could suit Scottie Scheffler at the Tour Championship

East Lake hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Scheffler in the past. Back in 2022, the American let a final-round lead slip, allowing Rory McIlroy to claim his third Tour Championship title.

Furthermore, 12 months ago, Scheffler headed to Atlanta with a lead, only to watch Viktor Hovland run out victorious.

Now, with East Lake a very different challenge from the one faced 12 months ago, the 28-year-old’s task could be made easier. Scheffler, along with the rest of the field, will have to relearn the course, which could play into the hands of the world number one.

Given Scheffler’s year to date, he won’t have a better opportunity to finally add a FedEx Cup title to his resume. Surely the American will get the job done this time around.
