Scottie Scheffler had an unusual nightmare of a day at Pinehurst as he limped into the weekend on five over par.
The world number one could not buy a putt and was wayward off the tee again as he showed the world that he is human after all.
Scheffler had been dominating proceedings in the last few weeks and went into the US Open as the overwhelming favourite to win the whole tournament.
However, he’s had a tough opening two days and is now surely well out of contention to win, sitting some ten back of the leaders.
Of course, Pinehurst No.2 is not set up to be anyone’s friend and it punishes the very best in world golf.
But Scheffler, rather than complain, delivered a verdict on the course that is typical of the class he often shows.

Scottie Scheffler’s surprising verdict on Pinehurst No.2 after round two of the US Open
Speaking to the media after his round – quotes from Golf Digest – Scheffler admitted that while the course was a ‘grind’, he still managed to have a good time.
“Yeah, it was for sure [a grind],” Scheffler said.
“Around this place you have to hit such good shots. The golf course is challenging. I think personally it’s fun to play, but yeah, it was definitely a grind.”
Scheffler needs a huge round three
There was a point where it looked like Scheffler might definitely be out of the tournament at the first hurdle but he lives to fight another day.
And fight is what he is going to have to do.
Today and yesterday were so out of character for Scheffler and you wonder if the last few months have started to just play catch up a bit.
Still, while ever he is in the tournament he is a threat and if anyone can go out and shoot five or six under out of nowhere, it’s Scottie Scheffler.
That’s the sort of round he needs tomorrow to have any sort of chance and the rest of the field will be licking their lips at seeing him so far down the leaderboard.
Scheffler, then, needs a massive day.
