Scottie Scheffler has been coached by Randy Smith since he was a young child, for 22 years now in fact.
Scheffler is a phenomenal golfer and he has been the best player in the world over the past few years.
His success on the PGA Tour since February 2022 has been truly staggering, with 18 wins to his name, including four major championships. Oh, and he won an Olympic gold medal during that period as well!
Scheffler has already surpassed the careers of numerous top level PGA Tour players, and his wins have all come in the last three-and-a-half years.
Comparisons have already been made between Scheffler and Woods, and that’s no surprise given the exceptional form he has consistently shown over the past three years.
His victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday pretty much sealed the Player of the Year accolade.
However, there were times throughout the week at Caves Valley when he actually struggled with his game.
Scottie Scheffler reveals the ‘trick’ his coach Randy Smith has given him
Scheffler trusts Smith implicitly with his swing. Why wouldn’t he? The man has been right by his side since he was just seven-years-old.

The world number one spoke to The Golf Channel after his win at Caves Valley on Sunday.
He responded when asked how he turned things around with his irons on day four after some fairly average ball-striking by his standards throughout the week.
He said: “Randy gave me a trick a couple of weeks ago when I was home.
“Sorry, I say he gave me a trick a couple of weeks ago, he has given me the trick about 50 times in my life.
“Sometimes when I start pulling it, my right arm will get a little bit out from my body. So I just felt like I was keeping it closer to my body on the way through. It kind of helps eliminate that left shot and I struck it much better.“
Scottie Scheffler’s iron play improved every day at the BMW Championship
Scheffler is usually streets ahead of everyone else when it comes to his iron play.
He is ranked as the best on the PGA Tour this season in the strokes gained approach category, and he has done so for the past three seasons now.
However, he was unusually sloppy with his irons at Caves Valley last week, right up until the final round that is.
| BMW Championship rounds | Scheffler’s strokes gained approach rank |
| Round 1 | 26 |
| Round 2 | 17 |
| Round 3 | 9 |
| Round 4 | 2 |
That gradual increase throughout the week proves that he had the ability to fix his problems midway through the tournament.
The ‘trick’ passed down to Scheffler by Smith is obviously extremely useful. However, the 29-year-old’s quality is such that he rarely needs to use it.
