Scottie Scheffler pinpoints the one area of his game which he feels has really improved in 2025

Scottie Scheffler will probably be more frustrated with how he played at the Tour Championship than the fact that he missed out on winning the FedEx Cup title for a second straight year.

Under the previous format, Scottie Scheffler would have retained the FedEx Cup crown at East Lake. He would have beaten Tommy Fleetwood by one shot, had the tournament played out in exactly the same way.

Scheffler’s challenge came to an end when he found water on the 15th hole in the final round. The world number one ended up in a tie for fourth, four shots behind Fleetwood.

Nevertheless, it has been another incredible season for the 29-year-old. Scheffler won five times, including at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

Of course, he was trying to follow on from a year in which he won nine times worldwide. But Scheffler’s consistency has been truly remarkable. You would have to go back to the 2024 BMW Championship for the last time Scheffler finished outside the top 30 at any event.

And following his final round at the Tour Championship, he was asked to compare his two seasons.

“Yeah, I think after a year like ’24, I think sometimes people’s expectations and stuff of me can change. For me, nothing really changes. I’m not satisfied with where I’m at. I’m always trying to get a little bit better. I think that’s just part of the game. I think that’s what I love about golf is you’re always trying to get a little bit better,” he said.

“I feel like this year I improved my putting from last year, and that was really the one area of the game that I’ve been working quite hard on. Phil and I have been doing a lot of stuff, and it’s nice to get some good results from that. Yeah, that’s the reason I was able to win some more tournaments this year.”

How Scottie Scheffler’s putting in 2024 compares with the 2025 season

It should surely alarm the rest of the PGA Tour just how often Scheffler has looked well short of his best and gone on to register a top five finish. Scheffler could not hide his frustration at times at East Lake.

The statistics certainly back up the idea that his putting has improved. It was the one glaring weakness in his game in 2024 – though he was still inside the top-half on the PGA Tour.

But Scheffler has now become one of the best putters on tour. His form prompted Brandel Chamblee to label Scheffler the most complete player East Lake had ever seen ahead of the Tour Championship. And that will be a worry for all of those hoping to close the gap in the near future.

Scheffler does not need to be firing on all cylinders to blow a field away. Given how quickly he transformed his putting, it is scary to think about what state his game will be in when 2026 arrives.
