Scottie Scheffler is in to the weekend at the US Open but he’s been forced to pass comment on Ryder Cup teammate Sam Burns after his impressive round of 65 on day two.

While Scheffler struggled for his best once again and finished his round at one over for a score of +4 overall, fellow American Burns was on a tear at the top of the leaderboard.

Coming off his near miss at the Canadian Open, Burns carded a magnificent 65 to shoot himself into contention at the summit.

Burns is three under for the tournament and has looked as good as anyone so far navigating around the treacherous Oakmont property.

Scheffler, meanwhile, was straight on the range after speaking to the press, in which he’d found time to give his thoughts on Burns potentially winning his first major.

Scottie Scheffler says why Sam Burns is such a good putter

The key for Sam Burns over his second 18 holes of the week was he managed to get a few putts to drop when it mattered.

That is in stark contrast to others, with Jon Rahm among those to be furious at their putting around Oakmont.

Indeed, with that putting in mind, Scheffler explained just what makes Burns so good with the flatstick.

“Such a good putter? He plays golf, I think, very freely, and he’s got really good natural instincts when it comes to his putting, and a lot of it is just very reactionary. He’s got good fundamentals, good instinct, and he putts very reactionary. That’s really all there is to it, it’s as simple as that,” Scheffler said.

Asked further if he had a feeling of just how much Burns wanted to get his hands on a major championship, Scheffler refused to be drawn in and simply suggested Burns is just like everyone else.

“I mean, it’s a complicated question. I think Sam is one of those guys, he’s like me in a sense that he’s a hyper-competitive person. I think you always dream of having a chance to win these tournaments, and he’s put himself in position a few times at majors, and he’s in position again,” he continued.

“I’m sure going into the weekend he’s right where I would want to be on the leaderboard, so you know, to have a good chance, it should be a fun experience for him.”

Sam Burns’ putting stats in 2025

Being one of the best putters on the PGA Tour is always going to put you within touching distance of wins and it’s no surprise to see Burns doing well at Oakmont.

Indeed, Burns is emerging as one of the best around on the greens and his stats back it up.

He’s number one in strokes gained putting on the entire TOUR this season and every putting metric is high for him.

In fact, barring his three-putt avoidance, Burns is in the top ten for each putting statistic.

Right now, Sam Burns is very much in prime position to win the US Open and if he can get his iron play and driving to match his putting, then he’ll run away with it.
