Scottie Scheffler is the best and most complete player in the game right now, and he has been for quite some time in all fairness.

However, Brandel Chamblee has highlighted one weakness that Scheffler has in his armoury, despite the fact that he’s ranked incredibly high in that specific category.

The 29-year-old from Dallas, Texas, has enjoyed an extremely successful 2025 season, with three wins to his name thus far, including a major championship victory.

Now he will be desperate to win his fourth major championship this week at The Open.

Scheffler was pinpoint accurate with his irons at The Open on day one, as per usual.

However, his driving was poorer than usual. That said, Scheffler putted incredibly well at Royal Portrush, so his overall game seems to be in solid shape.

Scheffler has been exceptionally good at leaving his ball close to the hole when putting over the past three years.

He has featured inside the top 10 of the approach putt performance statistics in all of the last three seasons.

When speaking on the Golf Channel’s Live from The Open, Chamblee highlighted how performing well in that particular category isn’t actually a good thing.

He said: Over the last four years, he would be dead last in strokes gained putting (at The Open). I think that’s because he’s just too tentative. He’s never been a great putter, and that has led to him being tentative on the greens. There is a stat that I dare say you would not want to lead on the PGA Tour. Sometimes people talk about it in such a way you think you would want to lead it. Approach putt performance. In theory, it sounds like the person who leaves it closest to the hole has the best touch on the PGA Tour, but the best putters tend to be around 100-120th, which is to say they’re a little bit more aggressive.

So when you look at Scottie Scheffler’s approach putt performance over the last three years vs Denny McCarthy. Ninth this year, 10th last year, third the year before. That tells me he’s timid. Compare that to Denny McCarthy who’s 135th this year, 127th, 120th before that. Denny McCarthy is by far the best putter on the PGA Tour, and that holds true to almost every great putter.

“So yes, a little bit timid.

Over the past three years, Scheffler has averaged out as the number one in approach putt performance.

As Chamblee said, all that goes to prove is that the 29-year-old does not putt with any kind of belief or conviction.

If you watch Scheffler putt, he likes to die his putts into the hole, and it’s rare to see him race his ball past the cup.

Scheffler’s putting stats in 2025

The world number one has made huge strides on the greens this season.

He actually features near the top of the standings in all of the different putting statistical categories:

StatsScheffler’s rank
Strokes gained putting22nd
Putts per GIR4th
Putts per round15th
One-putt %18th
Total putting41st

If he is to elevate his game to another level entirely though, he will have to jump inside the top 10 for strokes gained putting.

Scheffler is totally dominant in pretty much every department of the game, and the American improving on the greens should be a really scary prospect for his rivals
