Scottie Scheffler got his Open Championship off to a very good start on Thursday, firing a round of three-under par 68.
Scheffler was by no means at his best at Royal Portrush on day one of the Open Championship, but he posted an extremely solid number, as he always seems to do.
The world number one has racked up three PGA Tour wins this season including a major championship.
Before the start of the tournament, Paul McGinley said Scheffler must improve his putting if he is going to win The Open.
Scheffler has admitted that he is a big fan of playing at The Open, where his creativity around the greens and with his irons can be a real asset.
However, he definitely wasn’t the full package on Thursday.
The 29-year-old was solid on the greens at Portrush on day one, but he did have another big issue.
Scottie Scheffler has an issue despite shooting 68 at The Open Championship
Scheffler is well known for being the most consistent golfer on the planet.

Even when he isn’t at his best, he manages to get around in a decent score.
His 68 at Royal Portrush on Thursday was actually a lot better than decent.
However, his round did not pass without problems. In fact, his main issue from day one could have proven to be extremely costly.
Scheffler ranked 117th in driving accuracy on day one of The Open but incredibly, he ranked first in approach to the greens.
I cannot believe that that combination would have ever been achieved before, even before statistics were officially kept.
It just goes to show just how good Scheffler is with his irons. He hit just three fairways at Portrush on Thursday, so for him to finish at the top of the approach standings really was quite remarkable.
Scottie Scheffler’s detailed stats from round one of The Open
Scheffler was the red-hot favourite to win The Open before the tournament began.
And his odds would have shortened after his first round on Thursday.
However, he absolutely has to address his issues with the driver, if he is to win the fourth major of his career this week.
Here is how his stats look after day one:
| Stat | Scheffler’s round one ranking |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 94th |
| Strokes gained approach | 1st |
| Strokes gained around the greens | 75th |
| Strokes gained putting | 8th |
| Strokes gained total | 4th |
The world number one has an incredibly hard work ethic, so he will undoubtedly be on the driving range this evening with his coach Randy Smith trying to get to the bottom of his issues with the driver.
Scheffler will fix the problem he has with the big stick – he is one of the best in the world at quickly turning around a weakness and making it his strength.
And it should surprise nobody if he drives the ball very well on day two of The Open.
