Scottie Scheffler produced a surprisingly poor round of golf in the third round of the Genesis Invitational to give himself an almighty task in terms of winning.

Scheffler began the day just a stroke off the lead but over the course of 18 holes at Torrey Pines, he struggled to get going.

The world number one had looked in imperious form in rounds one and two with many expecting him to go on and simply swallow up the field.

However, a number of mistakes, including with the putter, haunted Scheffler on day three as he drifted back down the leaderboard to be way off the pace.

Scottie Scheffler makes unusual bogey run at The Genesis

Scottie Scheffler is known for being consistent and even Rory McIlroy has admitted he wants to be more like Scheffler going forward.

However, the world’s best player was simply not at the races in round three and remarkably, he also did something he’s not done since 2019.

Shared by Golf journalist Justin Ray, Scheffler actually managed to bogey two par fives on a nine hole stretch for the first time in nearly six years.

Scottie Scheffler putting demons come back to haunt him

Scheffler’s putting was a problem before his surge in 2024 and it very much looked like the old problems were back a bit in round three.

Indeed, in another statistic shared by Justin Ray, Scheffler managed to break a streak of 521 made putts in a row from inside three feet before he missed an easy look at hole six.

With so much expected of Scheffler – and Rory McIlroy, who also struggled – it looks like we’re on course for a less recognisable face winning out this week, with the likes of Patrick Rodgers, Davis Thompson, and Denny McCarthy all in contention alongside European star Ludvig Aberg.
