Scottie Scheffler recently questioned why he works so hard on his game and why he is so obsessed about winning golf tournaments.
Now, at the Tour Championship this week, Scheffler has proven to everyone once again how he is the most competitive player in the game.
Oh, and the world number one is the best golfer on the planet by quite some distance as well. He has dominated the PGA Tour this season with five wins to his name, including two major championships.
And it feels like Scheffler is relishing playing the Tour Championship without receiving starting strokes.
Scheffler outshone Rory McIlroy once again at the Tour Championship on Thursday afternoon, in spite of the Northern Irishman’s extremely lucky birdie on the final hole.
The American fired a 63 and he is sitting two shots off the lead held by Russell Henley.
Scheffler is drawing comparisons with Tiger Woods and it’s little wonder as to why. The 29-year-old never has an off week, and that was no different at East Lake on Thursday.
Scottie Scheffler breaks his own record on day one of the Tour Championship
There can’t be more records for Scheffler to break this season can there?

He seems to defy the notion that golf is the hardest sport to be consistently good at.
15 top-10 finishes in 18 starts on the PGA Tour this season says it all really. That will soon become 16 in 19 as well.
However, Scheffler did one thing during his opening round at East Lake which he has never actually done in competition before.
The man from Dallas, Texas, made three putts outside of 25 feet in the same round for the first time in his career on the PGA Tour.
The putts came on the 10th, 16th and 17th holes.
Scheffler’s par save on the 16th was arguably the most important putt of his round, and it enabled him to go on and post a round of seven-under par on day one of the Tour Championship.
Scottie Scheffler’s mind-blowing putting improvements since 2019
Scheffler has managed to become the best golfer in the world by a long way due to his improvements on the greens over the past 18 months, especially this season.
The world number one golfer has historically struggled on the greens, but that has not been the case since he switched to a mallet putter in March 2024.
Here is how Scheffler’s putting stats compare over the past six seasons on the PGA Tour:
| Year | Scheffler’s strokes gained putting rank |
| 2019-20 | 117th |
| 2020-21 | 107th |
| 2021-22 | 58th |
| 2022-23 | 162nd |
| 2024 | 77th |
| 2025 | 16th |
The fact that he’s ranked first in strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach, strokes gained total and is a top 20 putter on the PGA Tour this season must be demoralising for everyone else.
Scheffler’s improvements on the greens were clearly evident on day one of the Tour Championship, when he holed just over 140 feet of putts.
The thing is, if he keeps this up, it won’t even be a fair fight!
