Sam Burns was dealt a truly horrific break during the final round of the US Open at Oakmont on Sunday.
Burns started the final round as the leader of the US Open, and he actually played fairly solidly on the front nine, before things started to disintegrate for him on the back nine.
Golf fans fumed at the USGA for their treatment of Burns, and rightly so.
It was a disgraceful call – one that they must surely now realise they got badly wrong.
It is fair to argue that the ruling actually cost Burns a chance to win the US Open.

The 28-year-old could be forgiven for being utterly fuming with the USGA right now.
But how did he react after his round when reporters broached the subject to him?
Sam Burns reacts to drop ruling during final round of the US Open
The USGA handed Burns a disgustingly bad break on the 15th hole at Oakmont on Sunday.
He was surrounded by casual water that came about after the deluge of rain that hit Oakmont.
Players receiving relief from standing water was commonplace after the rain delay.
However, Burns wasn’t afforded the same luxury.
And the American responded when asked by reporters after his round what he thought of the decision not to give him a drop.

He said, “Yeah, that fairway slopes left to right. That’s kind of the low part of the fairway there. When I walked into it, clearly you could see water coming up. Took practice swings and it’s just water splashing every single time. Called a rules official over, they disagreed. I looked at it again. I thought maybe I should get a second opinion. That rules official also disagreed.
“At the end of the day, it’s not up to me, it’s up to the rules official. That’s kind of that.“
That’s real class from Burns. To react to what happened to him with a mature response like that says so much about him as a man.
Sam Burns’ US Open stats
Burns played extremely well throughout the week at Oakmont.
His numbers prove that he has a very well-rounded game.
| Stats | Burns’ rank |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 59th |
| Strokes gained approach | 3rd |
| Strokes gained scrambling | 10th |
| Strokes gained putting | 20th |
Those are some solid numbers from Burns, but he was obviously let down by his final round 78 on Sunday.
Hopefully Burns will bounce back from his US Open disappointment and achieve success in a big tournament very soon.
Let’s face it, he would be more than deserving of that.
