Sam Burns stood out from the crowd on day two of the US Open, having carded a five-under 65 at Oakmont.

Burns really impressed with his putting in the second round of the US Open, which he ended sitting T2 in the leaderboard.

He was behind only day one leader J.J. Spaun, who started late on Friday at Oakmont as Burns started early.

The latter is yet to win a major championship in his career so far, but Burns has won five times on the PGA Tour.

He now finds himself in contention heading into the weekend at the US Open, where many high-profile players are expected to miss the cut.

Sam Burns explains the difference between the Oakmont greens and others on the PGA Tour

Burns was tasked with discussing his putting after round two, having been asked in his press conference if he learned anything about the greens on Thursday, and what else may have helped him shine with his putter on Friday.

He replied: “Other than they’re extremely difficult, not really. I think a lot of times you have putts where even from 15 or 20 feet where you’re not really trying to make them, you’re just trying to get the speed right and hope that it snuggles up next to the hole.

“I even had a couple today that were 15 or 20 feet that I hit three or four feet by without even thinking about it. You have to really pay attention to where you’re at.”

And asked how different that is from the average course he plays on the PGA Tour, Burns responded: “Well, I mean, I think speed-wise, the golf course… the greens we play are pretty quick. But the speed of these with how much slope is in them, that’s what makes them very difficult.”

Burns soared the leaderboard with his hugely impressive second round showing, which was the lowest score of the week at that stage.

The American opened with a two-over 72 in round one, in which his five birdies were accompanied by five bogeys.

Tallies of six and one respectively followed in the second round, with the 28-year-old also carding 11 pars on day two.

Such form was also on show at the Canadian Open earlier this month, where he lost in a playoff to Ryan Fox.

Also asked if he thought in his practice rounds that 65 was possible in Oakmont, Burns said: “Honestly, I didn’t really think of much of a score.

“Like I said, the golf course is really too difficult to try to figure out what’s a good score and what’s not. You’re really just shot by shot and trying to play each hole the best you can.”
