Luke Donald can probably be forgiven for not quite being at his best when it comes to actually playing golf.

The former world number one still likes to dip his toe in here and there on certain events but as we all know, his focus right now is on the Ryder Cup in a few weeks’ time.

Donald leads Team Europe to Bethpage Black looking to become the first captain to go back to back in wins for Europe since Tony Jacklin back in the 70s.

Going to Bethpage will be some task and in preparation for that, Donald and a number of his squad have been trying to hone their games at the K Club for the Irish Open.

However, while players like Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have played well so far, for captain Donald, the quest to win is already over after he missed the cut.

Still, in typical Luke Donald fashion, he’s been on Instagram sharing the positivity.

Luke Donald’s latest Instagram message as he prepares for the Ryder Cup

For the European skipper, all eyes are on the Ryder Cup now and while he’s playing at the minute and preparing to be at Wentworth as well, there’s no denying where his focus lies.

Of course, Donald will be delighted to see some of his top stars playing well and with Rory McIlroy looking in fine form, it’s a bonus.

Nevertheless, Donald is a winner and he would have liked to have at least made the weekend.

Still, as we’ve come to expect from the European captain, he’s maintained his class over on Instagram.

Rory McIlroy’s form will delight Luke Donald

While Luke Donald might be on his way home from the K Club, his most pressing matter is the Ryder Cup and he’ll be over the moon with how some of his big guns are playing.

The main man, of course, is Rory McIlroy.

The world number two is very much Europe’s talisman and if they’re to have any chance of winning at Bethpage, then McIlroy has to perform.

Luckily for Europe and Donald, McIlroy has found some form in Ireland. Currently at ten under par and just four off the leaders, McIlroy’s third round has shown just why he is the top dog for Europe.

So, while Donald himself will have wanted to do better, seeing his star man playing well in a crucial month will mean just as much to him.
