Russell Henley was one of the most surprising players to miss the cut at The Masters last week.

Henley had been in red-hot form in 2025, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in March.

Not many thought he would win the Green Jacket, but the world number seven was supposed to have an impressive week at Augusta National.

Henley has now explained the costly mistake he made at The Masters, which meant he missed out on the weekend.

Russell Henley explains what went wrong at The Masters

Despite winning the Arnold Palmer and finishing 30th at the Players Championship, Henley felt the need to work on his swing at The Masters.

And he said that he was “thinking too much” about it during the first round at Augusta, leading to a disappointing seven-over-par 79.

Henley bounced back on Friday with an excellent display, but a bogey on the 18th hole meant he finished on +3 and cost him a place at the weekend.

“Yeah, last week on the first day, I really was thinking too much technically about my swing,” he told the media at the RBC Heritage. “I had a couple things I was working on, and instead of going and playing golf, I kind of carried that into the round, and that’s never worked for me.

“I don’t make that mistake very often, but I did last week. Friday, I played a lot better and a lot more free. Really not free, just more clear-headed and less thoughts in my head.

“Yeah, I feel like my game has been there. Sometimes we can get in our own way a little bit.”

Russell Henley gives verdict on RBC Heritage first round

Henley seemed back to his best in the opening round at the RBC Heritage as he shot a 64 to join Scottie Scheffler in joint second.

He’s only three shots behind Justin Thomas after his sensational 61 and has done well so far to put The Masters behind him.

“Yeah, I had a couple of good breaks, but I putted great, had a couple of good saves,” Henley added. “The first hole, I made a great save for par. Kind of a sloppy tee shot.

“If I hit it in trouble, I managed to make a par. Yeah, just going to try to clean up the driver just a little bit and just continue to putt like that would be great.”
