Rory McIlroy ended his 2024 season on a high after winning the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estate’s Earth Course in Dubai.

McIlroy has equalled Seve Ballesteros’ order of merit wins and remains on course to beat Colin Montgomerie’s all-time record.

McIlroy’s swing changes appear to be working well, and the Northern Irishman will no doubt be optimistic about the 2025 season.

The four-time major winner’s DP World Tour Championship victory turned out to be relatively stress-free on the 72nd hole after his nearest competitor, Rasmus Hojgaard, faded during the latter stages.

McIlroy took complete control and also played one audacious shot on the 486-yard par-four 18th.

The four-time major winner’s pinpoint approach over the water set up a birdie and what would prove to be a decisive moment in the championship.

Ewen Murray, speaking on Sky Sports coverage, was blown away by the moment of class from McIlroy.

“It’s a quite sensational shot. What a time to deliver class like that,” said Murray

Dame Laura Davies, also on commentary, admired McIlroy’s bravery.

“You wanted brave; that was pretty brave,” she said.

Win number seals excellent 2024 for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s win at the Earth Course was his fourth of 2024 and capped an excellent season.

Of course, cynics will point toward the US Open at Pinehurst No.2 and some of the criticism is fair. McIlroy wilted at the key moments, which is something he must work on in 2025.

But, the Northern Irishman’s consistency is only matched by that of Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy is rarely out of contention, and if he can tidy up certain aspects of his game, wins and, hopefully, majors will follow.

With the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and Open at Royal Portrush, 2025 could well be the year where McIlroy’s wait for major number five finally ends.
