Rory McIlroy has spoken out for the first time since losing the US Open and he’s got golf fans talking over on social media.
McIlroy left Pinehurst in a hurry as he lost out in the final round to Bryson DeChambeau.
As we know, McIlroy missed two short putts to hand Bryson the win, albeit DeChambeau did produce a world class bunker shot on 18 to set himself up for the win.
However, while Bryson was the story for a lot of people, McIlroy’s failure to win a major and then his subsequent exit were also a big talking point.
And McIlroy has left it until Monday evening to put some words out about his defeat, admitting he’ll be taking a break for a few weeks.

Taking to social media to share his thoughts on the situation, McIlroy produced a lengthy statement to explain his actions.
And as usual, social media has been awash with comments from fans having their say.

Like with any major sportsman or woman making a big announcement, especially after some controversy, fans everywhere wanted to have their say.
And in the main, fans seemed to side with Rory and back his stance about taking a hiatus.
Another couple of users shared the same sentiment as the above comment.
@jonathankmartin praised McIlroy’s efforts at Pinehurst.
“Solid run at Pinehurst, Rory. Nothing to be ashamed of.“
While @TerryInSoCalif also praised the Northern Irishman.
“Felt terrible for you yesterday. Take the time, enjoy family time with your wife and daughter and we will see you in Scotland”
The theme continued further down in the comments as well, with some fans backing McIlroy to win more majors in the future.
Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony was among those to reply in that vein.
“Class :). You’ll win another 4 or 5 majors minimum & in quick succession. Enjoy the family then go again. God bless”
While YouTube creator @MrProWestie also backed McIlroy to succeed.

McIlroy will bounce back like he has done before
While we can debate him not staying to shake Bryson’s hand till the cows come home, McIlroy will be back from this, no doubt at all.
He has done it in the past and even went on to the win The Open when he failed at the US Open before.
Having a break is probably what’s needed. He’s had a busy time off the course, and sometimes the human in us all needs to rest and come back.
McIlroy will be back. And he could be back better than ever.
