Rory McIlroy shares what he’s found ‘incredible’ about the first two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy has got the fans right where he wants them at the BMW PGA Championship this week as he goes into the weekend just four back of the lead.

A fine second round of four-under saw McIlroy to go nine-under overall and within four of the leader, Matthew Baldwin.

McIlroy’s round has set up a tantalising weekend where he could end up playing alongside the likes of Billy Horschel or Ryder Cup teammates Robert MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood.

As we know, McIlroy came within a shot or two of winning at the Irish Open last weekend and at the time, McIlroy lauded the impact of the Irish crowds on his game.

This week, while over in England, McIlroy is still a heavy favourite among the golfing faithful and that feeling is not lost on the world number three.

Speaking to the media after his second round, McIlroy was quizzed on the impact the crowds around Wentworth have been having on his game.

And while not the same as over in Ireland last week, McIlroy paid tribute to the fans in England.

“It’s amazing. Obviously last week, I don’t know if there’s anything that will compare to that scene on 18 on Sunday last week,” McIlroy commented.

“But I mean, the crowds out here for the first two days, it’s incredible. It’s a proper golf tournament. It’s the way it’s supposed to feel. And it’s a pleasure to play in front of them in that atmosphere, and looking forward to it for another two days.”

McIlroy can thrive off Wentworth crowds

McIlroy has already spoken of his desire to win again at the BMW and add his name to the list of multiple winners and a raucous crowd will only help him do that.

McIlroy is a player who thrives off the energy and we’ve seen that over the years in Ryder Cups and his major wins.

The weekend is going to be a big one for Rory and the field. If he can post a solid third round and go into the final day either leading or within a few shots, then it’s game on.

Yes, other big names are in the mix. But McIlroy is the one to beat here and if he starts well tomorrow, then he could well win out.
