Rory McIlroy is well in contention to win the BMW PGA Championship after his excellent first round yesterday.
McIlroy carded an excellent opening round of five under par to be among the leaders and with scoring conditions looking good for round two, McIlroy will feel there’s chances to go low.
Of course, the BMW is one of the biggest events on the entire DP World Tour and is very much seen as the tournament everyone wants to win.

McIlroy has won it once, while greats of the European circuit like Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo are multiple time winners.
And that, according to McIlroy, is one of the drivers behind him being so keen to win at Wentworth.

Rory McIlroy says why he’s so keen to win at Wentworth again
Speaking to the press after his fine opening round at Wentworth, McIlroy admitted that he’s all about winning the Race to Dubai this year.
And with that, McIlroy has admitted that winning at the BMW PGA is massive for him.
“Yeah, it’s an amazing golf tournament. It’s one of the best that we play throughout the calendar year. It’s important in the overall scheme of any year because of where I find myself in The Race to Dubai,”
“I’m trying to win that for the second time, and what that would mean to me, being alongside Seve and keeping closer to Monty and all that stuff. It’s a big tournament in that regard, and obviously a big tournament to try to be as resilient as possible after last week and move on.
“The nice thing about disappointments is that if you have something in this next week, it’s nice to keep busy and keep your mind focused on something else.”
McIlroy can win but low scores are needed
At the time of writing, English golfer Matthew Baldwin was at -12 after just eight holes in round two, meaning McIlroy could be starting his second round massively behind.
Of course, if Baldwin can put together such a round, while others are also showing promise, then McIlroy will fancy his chances if conditions remain the same.
But, and it’s a big but, McIlroy will need to cut the mistakes which have cost him dearly in recent times.
If he does that, and over the weekend can get somewhere near the -20 mark, then he has a great chance.
