Rory McIlroy got himself over the line to win the DP World Tour Championship and while it wasn’t all plain sailing for the 35-year-old, McIlroy has admitted he did hit a few big shots he was happy with.

McIlroy made an explosive start to the final round and found himself three ahead of Rasmus Hojgaard at one point.

However, as has been a theme for McIlroy in 2024, a mini implosion threatened all his good work as Hojgaard levelled after McIlroy two bogeys and no birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn.

In the end, though, McIlroy’s class showed as he made two birdies in the final three holes to see off Hojgaard.

McIlroy’s approach into 17 was particularly impressive as he fired a dart to within a foot.

And discussing that shot and a few others, McIlroy has revealed the four shots he felt got him the win.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of his win, McIlroy spoke of his round in general not being perfect but admitted that he’d hit a quartet of shots that really helped him over the line.

“To be able to get over the line. I got off to a great start and then I didn’t have my best in the middle of the round,” McIlroy conceded.

“I think Rasmus and I both struggled to get any momentum but I thought saving par on 15 was huge and then I made four great swings coming in, the wedge on 16, the shot on 17 and then the two shots into the last, so really pleased with the way I finished and thankfully I hung on on a tough day.”

Emotional McIlroy signs off for 2024 in style

There’s something so engaging about seeing a raw and unhinged Rory McIlroy winning a golf tournament after the near-misses of 2024.

McIlroy was in tears as he spoke of tying Seve Ballesteros and it was a reminder to everyone that despite his superstar status, he is very much human and simply wants to succeed.

After McIlroy was told he needed to be at least three under par to win, the Northern Irishman did just that to cap his season off.

As we know, McIlroy has had a tumultuous year off the course as well and seeing him win before embracing with his wife and kid was a great way to sign off.

With 2025 soon upon us, it will be interesting to see just how good McIlroy can be.
