Rory McIlroy is firmly in contention as the third round of the Amgen Irish Open gets underway at Royal County Down.
The Northern Irishman starts the day at four under, two shots back of leader Matteo Manassero.
McIlroy loves Royal County Down and is seeking his second Irish Open title after his win eight years ago at the K Club.
Of course, the Northern Irishman is also enjoying the home town support this week, and McIlroy spoke about the atmosphere upon the conclusion of his second round.
Rory McIlroy wowed by Royal County Down atmosphere at the Irish Open

McIlroy is trying to manage his emotions after struggling at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
Nevertheless, the four-time major winner still lauded the crowds in Newcastle and suggested Friday’s galleries were even bigger.
“Yeah, it’s been amazing,” McIlroy said. “I felt like even the crowds today were maybe a little bigger than they were yesterday, and yeah, it was great.
“It’s fun to play in an atmosphere like that. It was great to see Tom play well today, shoot a couple under and get himself into the weekend. I’m not too far out of it, either.”
Rory McIlroy on course for memorable Irish Open title
McIlroy needed to get out of America and back to some familiarity this week. The 35-year-old is staying at home and making the hour-long journey to Royal County Down.
The arduous PGA Tour season took its toll on McIlory, particularly after his heartbreaking US Open loss at Pinehurst No.2.
Since his missed putts in North Carolina, McIlroy appeared drained and unable to rekindle his early season form.
Travelling back to Europe was a smart move, and hopefully, a string of wins will follow as he prepares for the 2025 PGA Tour campaign.
