Rory McIlroy is not completely out of things at The Open but knows it’s going to take a mammoth effort for him to reel in Scottie Scheffler at the summit.
Scheffler is leading the field by four shots after another stunning display of golf saw him pull clear.
As for Rory McIlroy, it was another successful day for him as well and he sits six shots off the lead despite making some huge putts throughout his 18 holes.
McIlroy and Scheffler are both seeking a second major win of the season and at the moment, it feels like Scheffler is going to need the mother of all meltdowns to allow someone else into the picture.
Still, and as expected, McIlroy remains buoyant and he’s spoken of his plan to try and catch the world number one.

Rory McIlroy reveals how he plans to catch Scottie Scheffler at The Open
Rory McIlroy remains one of the best golfers in the world and if it wasn’t for the brilliance of Scottie Scheffler, he’d be top of the lot.
However, he finds himself shy of the American, as everyone else does right now.
Nevertheless, McIlroy remains in a positive frame of mind and he’s put forward his plans to try and make sure he at least puts some pressure on Scheffler.
“Yeah, look, I’ve got more than half a chance. I’ve got a chance. I need to get off to a great start like I did today, and if I can do that, anything can happen. I’ve come from a few shots behind before at big tournaments and was able to win,” McIlroy admitted.
“If I can get off to one of those hot starts again, maybe Scottie feels a little bit of that a couple of groups behind, and you never know. Scottie is the best player in the world right now. I think it’s clear for everyone to see. He’s just consistently so good each and every week he tees it up, so it’s going to be a tall order to be able to catch him tomorrow. But I’m going to look forward to the challenge.”
Rory McIlroy praises Scottie Scheffler
We’ve all seen over the last two years that Scottie Scheffler seems to be in a world of his own when it comes to his overall golf game.
Right now, he’s the best in nearly aspect of the game and it shows on a weekly basis.
Indeed, for McIlroy, knowing Scheffler is top of the pile means he’s going to be relying on the world number one making some uncharacteristic mistakes.
“I don’t think so [Brings about a change in strategy]. Talking of execution, he’s probably the best in the business right now. The only thing that I can hope for is I get off to the same start that I got off to today, get the crowd really going, and then hopefully he might be able to hear that a couple groups back and maybe feel some pressure,” McIlroy added when quizzed on how good Scheffler is.
“But Scottie is an amazing player. He’s proved over the past two to three years that consistently he’s the best player in the world, and he’s going to be tough to catch tomorrow.”
In an ideal world, we see McIlroy get off to another flier and by the time Scheffler comes out, he’ll be just a few back.
If that is the case, then we could be in for fireworks on Sunday.
