Rory McIlroy was back to his brilliant best at the Scottish Open as he carded a round of five under for a 65 in round two to move into contention.

McIlroy came out of the blocks like a house on fire and he made five birdies between holes 10 and 16 to bump himself right up the leaderboard.

The Masters winner had just one blob on his scorecard all day, a bogey on hole eight, but in the main, it was the performance of a man who knows he can win at Renaissance Club.

As we all know as golf fans, McIlroy is capable of the sublime on any given day.

However, such was the brilliance of his second round in Scotland, that the man himself even had to think really hard about just which shots were his best.

Rory McIlroy’s three best shots in round two of the Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy is capable of playing shots that nobody else on the PGA or DP World Tour can do. He’s just that good and often, when it matters, he pulls it out of the bag.

McIlroy’s second round yesterday involved some fine iron shots and wedge play, while he also holed a few big putts to keep things going.

Indeed, answering the question of just what were his three best shots, McIlroy had to think long and hard before making his decision.

“My top three shots of the day…I would say the pitching wedge into 16. The four iron into seven. And…probably the putt on the first hole for par, just to keep it going,” McIlroy said.

Rory McIlroy has put the field on high alert in Scotland

Anytime you see a top player in and among the leaders, you feel as if them simply being there is going to impact on those around them trying to get the win.

With McIlroy now just a few back of the leaders and the names up there not exactly being mega-star quality, he will know full well he is in prime position to win.

Ludvig Aberg might well be his biggest challenger but those already above him will know that McIlroy is lurking and subsequently, that could impact their own games.

If McIlroy goes under par once again for round three, then we can all be certain he’s going to be a feature down the stretch on Sunday.
