Rory McIlroy has admitted his delight after an up-and-coming DP World Tour youngster made the cut at the 2024 Amgen Irish Open.
McIlroy is firmly in contention at the stunning Royal County Down after carding a one-under-par 70 to sit just two shots back of leader Matteo Manassero.
The Northern Irishman—currently four-under—stands an excellent chance of landing his second Irish Open title, eight years after his first at the K Club.
McIlroy, however, has admitted he was willing on one of his playing partners during his second 18 at Royal County Down.
Rory McIlroy pleased Tom McKibbin makes cut at 2024 Irish Open

Northern Irish youngster Tom McKibbin made the cut by two shots after carding a two under 69 during day two in Newcastle.
Luke Donald has his eye on McKibbin ahead of the Ryder Cup, and McIlroy admitted he was willing his compatriot on during Friday’s play.
“It’s more serious than that, but I was just as engaged in Tom’s game as I was in my own today, cheering him on, getting him over the line to make the weekend, and he has,” McIlroy said during his post-round press conference. “Great for Tom and Ricky. Hope he has a great weekend and good tournament, not too good, but enough.”
Rory McIlroy on course for second Irish Open title
McIlroy expected a challenge at Royal County Down, and the famous venue has proven testing throughout the opening 36 holes.
Nevertheless, McIlroy has controlled his ball flight well and is firmly in contention as the weekend play gets underway.
Considering the four-time major winner is within touching distance of the lead, it’s hard to envisage him not being in contention come Sunday afternoon.
Clearly, McIlroy is playing freely and with far less pressure, which is perhaps why those at Royal County Down and watching on are witnessing some stellar golf.
