Rory McIlroy continues his quest for further success this week as he takes on the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
McIlroy won the DP World Tour Championship in 2024, which also resulted in the Northern Irishman claiming the Race to Dubai title.
It was his third successive Race to Dubai title and sixth overall, with McIlroy entering the final DP World Tour event occupying first place in the standings.
He is ahead of Marco Penge in second and Tyrrell Hatton in third, with that duo the only other players mathematically capable of winning this year’s top prize.

Rory McIlroy praises ‘amazing’ Colin Montgomerie record on the DP World Tour
While McIlroy has really impressed with six Race to Dubai titles, it is Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie who leads the way in that regard with eight, when it was known as the Order of Merit.
That includes seven successive wins from 1993-1999, with McIlroy now saying of that stunning run: “I think it’s amazing to have that sustained excellence for that long.
“There are a lot of people who can have a good year or a two-year run. But to sustain that for seven years straight, it probably doesn’t get talked about enough, especially in that golden age of European golf where he’s going up against [Nick] Faldo and [Sandy] Lyle and [Bernhard] Langer and [Ian] Woosie.
“Not saying that this isn’t a pretty good generation, too, but he had to fend off some really tough competition.”
How Rory McIlroy feels about chasing Colin Montgomerie’s record
Montgomerie does indeed deserve huge praise for his stunning feats back then, particularly with the top stars he battled against, as McIlroy mentioned.
The Scot then added another title in 2005, with the current champion now sharing his take on what it would mean to edge closer to his overall tally this week.
McIlroy said: “Yeah, of course, to move from six to seven, to go one past Seve [Ballesteros] would be amazing.
“To get one closer to Monty would be amazing. But I think when I say I’m not chasing anything, I think if I focused my energy on certain tournaments and try to play well at certain tournaments, then Race to Dubai is almost just… it sort of takes care of itself.
“You know, hopefully these season-long awards are something that just come along because you’ve won some big tournaments along the way.
“So yeah, I guess you could say I’m still chasing that, but I think that’s just more a byproduct of playing the good golf that I know that I can.”
