It wasn’t to be for Rory McIlroy this weekend at The Players as he let a brilliant start slip away over the next three days.

In the end, McIlroy still carded a respectful nine under par. However, that also left him some 11 shots off Scottie Scheffler at the top of the leader board.

Indeed, Scheffler was dominant as he hauled in Wyndham Clark and Xander Schauffele, with the world number one even being tipped to win all four majors.

For McIlroy, though, it’s back to the drawing board ahead of The Masters in April and the Northern Irishman has admitted he has a bit of a problem with his swing right now.

Rory McIlroy admits he has a new swing problem

Speaking in the post-match flash interviews from The Players, McIlroy conceded he has an issue with his swing right now, albeit he knows what the problem is.

“It’s swing related. My misses last week were predominantly to the left, and for the most part with the irons I did, but I started to get a left miss off the tee. Golf is very fickle game, it gives you one thing and then takes away something else from you. I feel like I have all the components there but putting them all together on any given week, that is the tricky bit at the minute,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy is desperately chasing a fifth major and a first at Augusta to complete the career grand slam.

Rory McIlroy swing issue is a worry

With Scheffler playing so well and the big names from LIV like Jon Rahm and Cam Smith to come over for The Masters, it’s looking a tough ask on current form for Rory to win.

McIlroy is not playing ‘badly’. But the fact he thinks there’s something not right in his swing suggests there’s work to be done and crucially, a thought in his head he doesn’t need.

Any golfer knows, all the way down to a 30 handicapper, that if you have things in your head when swinging the golf club, then it’s hard to get into a rhythm.

Everyone in Europe probably wants McIlroy to get the monkey off his back and win in Augusta.

However, with so many good players and now this complication, it’s looking an almighty task.
