So, Rory McIlroy is finally a Masters champion after 16 long and painful years of trying.

McIlroy had experienced so many close calls and painful near misses throughout the years at Augusta National, before finally getting the job done earlier this month.

The 89th edition of The Masters will go down in history as one of the greatest golf tournaments ever witnessed.

It really was one for the ages but if truth be told, McIlroy made The Masters more interesting than it should have been on the back nine on Sunday!

After his win at Augusta, it has even been suggested that McIlroy has a realistic chance of winning the calendar year Grand Slam.

That may well end up being impossible – nobody has done it in the history of the game after all.

However, one thing’s for sure – McIlroy will not end his career with just five major championships to his name.

Rocco Mediate says Rory McIlroy did something at The Masters that was ‘ridiculous’

Mediate knows all about challenging for major championships.

He came extremely close to winning the US Open at Torrey Pines way back in 2008, only to lose in a play-off to Tiger Woods in the end.

Mediate was speaking on the Rolling the Rock Podcast for Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio alongside rock star Alice Cooper about McIlroy’s thrilling victory at Augusta three weeks ago.

Cooper suggested to Mediate that the 35-year-old’s approach into the 15th on Sunday at The Masters was the one of the best shots he’s ever witnessed:

“What about that shot he hit on 15, that was one of the best shots I’ve ever seen.”

And the 2008 US Open runner-up responded by saying:

“Yeh, in history, it was genius, absolute genius. One thing cool about Augusta is everybody knows the golf course. They see it on TV every year, it’s the coolest place ever. You know where he was on 15 because you’ve watched it on TV a million times, so cool. It was impossible, how about the sound it made, like he shot it out of a gun, it was ridiculous.”

Mediate is spot on. There are not many players in the game who could have hit that shot in the first place, but to pull it off at such a crucial moment of the tournament was what was truly special about it.

Padraig Harrington explains what made McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole at The Masters so good

Harrington is always so eloquent when he speaks, and he is incredibly knowledgable about the game of golf.

It’s easy for reporters and tour players to say that McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole at Augusta was one of the best they’ve ever seen.

However, Harrington is the only person who made one very important point about the specific shot that McIlroy hit on Masters Sunday.

It’s easy to hit a great shot when you’re feeling good. It’s really hard to hit a good shot, when you’re feeling bad.

Harrington also went on to suggest that numerous top level players could have hit the shot that McIlroy did.

However, he highlighted the crucial difference, that being that they would have pitched the ball 10 or 15 yards further into the green for safety and ended up over the back.

What made McIlroy’s shot on the 15th hole on Masters Sunday so special was the fact that he had the guts to fly his ball only a few yards over the water, because that then meant that he would have a really good chance to make an eagle.

That’s what you call going out to win a golf tournament rather than trying not to lose it.
