Robert MacIntyre produced a stunning display in the final round of the US Open, but fell just short as J.J. Spaun lifted the trophy.

Spaun shot a five-over-par 40 on the front nine at Oakmont on Sunday, but recovered to card a two-over 72.

And that was enough for Spaun to narrowly clinch his maiden major championship win and just his second career PGA Tour title.

The American ended his four rounds at the US Open on one-under, with MacIntyre finishing second on one-over.

MacIntyre played alongside Cameron Young on day four of the tournament, with the latter finishing T4 alongside LIV Golf duo Tyrrell Hatton and Carlos Ortiz.

What Robert MacIntyre said after losing US Open title to J.J. Spaun at Oakmont

Young didn’t want to discuss MacIntyre after his final round, but the Scot was more than happy to discuss Spaun after his.

The runner-up showed his class in defeat with a lengthy applause and a “wow” as he watched the champion sink a 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole on TV.

As per Golf’s James Colgan, the 2025 US Open runner-up said of that reaction: “He won the golf tournament.

“I mean, he’s dreamed of it. I’ve dreamed of it. Everyone’s dreamed of that moment. For him to pour in the winning putt, nothing I can do. Fair play.”

Robert MacIntyre deserves huge praise despite narrowly missing out on US Open title

Spaun will never forget his victory at the US Open, and in particular that monster putt that helped secure the win.

Oakmont fans who took in the action will be feeling the same, with the spectators fully rewarded for hanging around after the lengthy rain delay.

MacIntyre was left almost speechless at the winning putt, with his genuine reaction deserving huge plaudits, along with his efforts on the course.

A part of him will, however, be hugely heartbroken about how the ending played out, but he proved he is more than capable of challenging at major level.

The Scot has only won twice on the PGA Tour, but a major championship success is seemingly not too far away.

The same can be said of his fellow European Viktor Hovland, who finished one shot behind MacIntyre in third.

There were also impressive displays at Oakmont from a handful of LIV Golf players, who were outnumbered by their PGA Tour counterparts.

But Hatton and Ortiz stepped up in the very difficult conditions, with 2021 US Open champion Jon Rahm finishing one shot behind the duo in T7.
