Robert MacIntyre is in pole position to win the BMW Championship after shooting 62 and 64 in his first two rounds at Caves Valley.

MacIntyre has made 16 birdies and just two bogeys at the BMW Championship, with two rounds still to play.

Towards the end of his second round, MacIntyre thought he may have been handed a two-stroke penalty at the BMW Championship after his ball moved just before he attempted his eagle putt.

However, his ball moved through ‘natural forces’ so he avoided punishment.

The Scot has been on a different level to every other player in the field at Caves Valley this week.

Tommy Fleetwood described MacIntyre’s opening round 62 as ‘ridiculous’, and he was was in imperious form on Friday as well, when he shot 64.

So what has led to the 29-year-old’s good form all of a sudden?

Robert MacIntyre takes action ahead of the BMW Championship

MacIntyre wasn’t in the best of form heading into the BMW Championship.

However, he has clearly turned that around over the past few days.

After his second round 64 at the BMW Championship, MacIntyre opened up on how playing links golf last month messed with his technique.

He said: When I play links golf I change my technique, I change quite a lot of things. I change ball position, set up, it’s a completely different game when you go to links golf. So I kind of neglected the technique and when I came back out it was a little bit off.

I could not work it out so it was a may day call for Simon [his swing coach] to come over and it’s been worth it. We get on great and he just simplifies things for me.

American commentator and former professional golfer Mark Rolfing was fascinated by the Scot’s comments.

Rolfing said: That interview was fascinating to me. It showed me a European mentality when it comes to playing the game.

Almost every American that you talk to does not change their technique when they’re playing links golf vs regular golf. They have to use the ground more and they can run the ball up, keep it a little lower into the wind.

But he has said that he actually changes technique when he goes from regular golf to links golf. He changes ball position and everything. That is so European to me and the imaginative way that he plays, particularly for a kid who grew up off the West Coast of Scotland.

Robert MacIntyre’s stats during two rounds of the BMW Championship

The cornerstone of MacIntyre’s success this week has been his exceptional work on the greens.

Here are his stats from the opening two rounds:

Those stats prove how important putting is.

MacIntyre has holed 143 feet of putts during the first two rounds of the BMW Championship, and if his putter remains hot at Caves Valley over the weekend, he should win the tournament comfortably.
