Rickie Fowler came storming back to the Rickie Fowler of old as he carded a brilliant round of 64 to move into contention at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Club.

Fowler shot an impressive six under par to put himself safely into the weekend and well in contention, despite Ben Griffin moving five shots clear with his own brilliant round.

For Ryder Cup hopeful Fowler, getting back to something close to his best is key if he’s to have any chance of making Keegan Bradley’s team.

Fowler is without a win on the PGA Tour since 2023 but there’s been a few signs in the last 12 months his game is edging towards improvement and over at Colonial Club, the 36-year-old showed his best yet.

Indeed, the Colonial Club would be a fine place for Fowler to get back to winning ways and speaking about the course after his second round, Fowler spoke about the set up of the course.

Rickie Fowler says how he feels about Colonial Club after round two of the Charles Schwab Challenge

With Colonial having undergone something of an overhaul in recent times, the course is playing a touch different to what many players are used to.

However, for Rickie Fowler, he’s admitted that the course isn’t much different in terms of difficulty, but there are subtle differences.

“I’ve always loved Colonial. It’s a fun golf course. It’s not one that you can necessarily go out and overpower. There’s a few holes where you can kind of let it loose. Other than that, it’s much more position golf. You don’t have to hit a whole lot of drivers around this place,” Fowler admitted.

“I would say difficulty-wise it’s still about the same as far as you play well, it’s not like you’re shooting a whole lot better or lower numbers. I think it’s maybe a little bit easier when you are out of position. You can run it up on more greens where greens sat kind of up and were guarded by bunkers before.

“But I would say, like I said, similar scores and numbers that you’ll see. I think they did a great job of making it a lot more playable for general membership.”

Rickie Fowler’s inconsistent form in 2025 means anything could happen

There have been moments in Rickie Fowler’s last 18 months or so where he has looked close to being back to his best but it’s then slipped away.

Now, at six under and just five back of the leaders, Fowler does have a chance to finally make a run over the weekend and make it count.

However, his form in 2025 shows us that anything could happen. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship last time out, but finished in T15 the week prior at the Truist Championship.

That finish at the Truist was his best of the season and now back in position to improve on that, Fowler will surely be desperate to go one better.
