YouTube gold sensation Rick Shiels has made a suggestion for a brand new Olympic golf event which could run alongside the traditional 72-hole format.

Le Golf National hosted a thrilling four days, with Scottie Scheffler eventually winning after a stunning final round.

Much of the talk in Paris has centred around improving the Olympic golf event for the Los Angeles games. A mixed event and match-play style format are rumoured to be under consideration at present.

After the final round, Fleetwood and Scheffler both said they would welcome a mixed event. Shiels has also been outspoken about the issue and believes changes could be made to make the competition more engaging.

Shiels has now suggested the two weeks should be viewed as a “festival of golf” and that unique events, such as the long drive, should be added.

“I want to see more of a festival of golf. It’s over two weeks. It includes doubles and long drives,” said Shiels.

“I think the long drive should be in the Olympics, 100 per cent. Could there even be a mini-golf tournament in there?”

Shiels added, “I’d actually quite like to see one-round shootouts. I feel like there need to be more variations that are more digestible.”

The Olympics could have made a mistake by sticking with a traditional format, given some of golf’s most entertaining moments have come during match-play events.

The long drive is also one of the more engaging formats of the sport as specialists attempt to launch their ball well over the 400-yard mark.

LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau would no doubt welcome the event and the two-time major champion has even dabbled in the sport before.

Back in 2022, DeChambeau was involved in the finals of the PLDA World Championships, where he faced off against Germany’s Martin Borgmeier. The LIV star topped out at 406 yards before Borgmeier landed a 426 monster to take the win.

If the long drive was included in 2028, DeChambeau would more than likely compete for Team USA.
