The USA were certainly made to work hard for their Solheim Cup victory over Team Europe in Virginia.

But the hosts got the job done in the end, with the USA ending their seven-year Solheim Cup drought with a 15½-12½ win on home spoil.

The dramatic Solheim Cup looked like being won by the hosts from the very first day, when they won both Friday sessions 3-1.

That 6-2 lead was extended to 10-6 in the foursomes and fourballs on Saturday, but a European fightback then took place in the Sunday singles.

Charley Hull stole the headlines with a 6&4 victory over world number one Nelly Korda, but ultimately the visitors fell short.

Korda and Hull exchanged messages after their clash in Virginia, with the former’s teammate Lilia Vu delivering the winning putt.

The team event certainly got the eye of Rick Shiels, although he isn’t entirely happy with the current scheduling of the competition in comparison to the Ryder Cup.

“I really, really, really enjoyed it,” he said on The Rick Shiels Golf Show. “I hope that the Solheim Cups from last year and this year, now get those eyeballs that it deserves.

“It actually has not been going for that many years, I’m sure it started in 1990. It’s only been going 30 odd years.

“Whereas the Ryder Cup started in 1927, so history wise it has got a lot to catch up on but I think eyeballs-wise it should get as many as the Ryder Cup. In fairness I think it should be on the same week, I really would love to push that.”

When are the next Solheim Cups and Ryder Cups?

The iconic competition alternates years with the Ryder Cup, the men’s equivalent, with the Solheim Cup set to return in 2026.

Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands will host the next edition, with the 2028 competition set to take place at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.

But Team Europe and Team USA will go head-to-head long before then at the next Ryder Cup, hosted by New York’s Bethpage Black.

That competition will take place on US soil next September, with Luke Donald returning as the European captain.

Keegan Bradley meanwhile will captain the hosts at the 2025 Ryder Cup, with the following event set for Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027.
