Rick Shiels claims it will be a ‘travesty’ if 34-year-old player never wins the Masters

The Masters tournament gets underway in just over two weeks’ time and a number of players such as Rory McIlroy and more will fancy their chances.

Scottie Scheffler is heading into the tournament very much the favourite.

But as we know in golf, all it takes is one good run of rounds and anyone in the field can walk away with one of golf’s most prestigious trophies.

This year will have the added spice of the LIV players returning. Most notably, current green jacket holder Jon Rahm comes to defend his title.

The PGA players, then, will be desperate to win out. And you’d like to think Rory McIlroy, a man who comes under so much pressure in this tournament, will be as desperate as anyone.

McIlroy has led the fight for the PGA but on a personal note, he needs The Masters to complete the career grand slam.

And speaking about McIlroy, Rick Shiels has suggested that the Northern Irishman is too good not to win there eventually.

Speaking on his Rick Shiels Golf podcast, the popular YouTube star discussed McIlroy’s credentials, as well as the strength of the field.

“There hasn’t been many multiple major winners. Less than a hundred, something like 80 multiple major winners. You then look at ‘multiple multiple’ major winners such as Rory McIlroy who have won four. That is difficult to keep winning, it really is. I mean I’m not saying he can’t win and he should win, he has to win more majors, it would be a travesty against golf if he didn’t win The Masters. His game suits that place so much it’s ridiculous. But competition is getting so hard now it’s ridiculous. You look at the players going into The Masters now, and I’ve not looked at the betting but where is Rory?,” Shiels said.

A win for the ages

The pressure on Rory McIlroy’s shoulders when it comes to The Masters is huge. It seems like it grows every single year as well.

There is no doubt he is good enough to win it. Even with someone like Scheffler playing so well, Rory could run away with it if he puts a few good rounds together.

Like most sports, fans want to see stories completed. Like Lebron James becoming the all-time leading NBA scorer last year or Lewis Hamilton surpassing Michael Schumacher. The story with McIlroy very much has a similar feel.

If McIlroy can finally get that green jacket, then you feel the weight will be lifted from him and he could well clock up even more major wins down the line.
