LIV Golf hit new heights this weekend as the fans flocked to Adelaide to soak up the atmosphere at LIV Australia.

With the overwhelming feeling on LIV being that fans aren’t quite as invested in the product as they are the PGA Tour, the crowd in Adelaide did its best to put that feeling to bed.

With Cameron Smith’s The Rippers team winning the team event, the atmosphere was something we’ve not seen on a golf course for some time.

Of course, the weekend also saw the PGA’s team event take place as Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won out in a playoff at The Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

Overall, then, it’s been a great week for those who like to push the team golf format.

And speaking specifically about the LIV event and The Rippers winning in Australia, Rick Shiels has shared just why the formula had the buy in from fans it did.

Rick Shiels shares honest verdict on team golf after Rippers win LIV Adelaide

Speaking on the latest episode of his Rick Shiels Golf Show, the popular YouTuber spoke on how team golf needs to mean something to the fans to be a success.

“The other thing was because it meant something. For the first time, it really, as a team, in their home country, The Rippers…Australian team, it meant something to the fans. And that, I’ve said this a million times over about the teams that they have to be location based. Even if, for example, JCB which is taking place in July, the LIV event, if the Majesticks – which obviously has Henrick Stenson in there – but if that was a full UK team, you can imagine the crowd being fully behind that team and wanting them to win like we saw in Australia with The Rippers. I think every team needs to have that story,” Shiels said.

LIV is trying to capitalise on recent successes and will be hoping the event in Australia is a turning point for them of sorts.

With Singapore up next, it will be interesting to see if the atmosphere will be replicated.

LIV Golf teams are not all like The Rippers

Shiels touches on this with his comments but not every team is solely dedicated to one country like the Rippers are.

There are teams like the Majesticks and the Fireballs who contain mainly English and Spanish players, while The Stingers are exclusively South African.

However, The Cleeks for example are made up of four golfers from all different nations, while the popular Crushers team has two Americans, an Englishman, and an Indian player.

Whether or not this is something that LIV looks to build further into its product in the future remains to be seen.

But if they can get reactions like they had in Australia, that naturally brings more eyes to the product and could well be where the powers that be take things in the future.
